Meaning and Purpose
Hospitality disposes the giver to the formative experience of being open, an experience of vulnerability, that is, wanting to be of help in a most authentic way and discovering that within the self there is little or no way of restoring a person to the fullness they are called to be without a total reliance on God.
Spirituality in the context of pain, suffering, grief, and loss.
Spirituality begins with the individual and relationship with self, God, humanity and creation. It embraces the totality of the human experience with its meaning that enables the individual to find purpose and direction in life.
Spirituality is evidenced by a sense of hope, purpose, optimism, energy, creativity, and connectedness to God (or a higher power) and to other people.
TRANSFORMING ELEMENTS
Four major horizons:
To give expression to the spirituality of St. John of God and that it become normative for the neighborhood facilitators who will assist the residents and care givers.
Developing a culture of mutual respect, dignity and mutual purpose in hospitality.
Develop models of hospitality that fuse guest and host that is a participative model for personal and group transformation.
The starting point is based on people’s experience. We are not super imposing a structure but helping people to recognize and appreciate their own gifts.
WHAT GROWING IN HOSPITALITY DOES
A Spirituality of Hospitality in the manner of St. John of God Encourages caregivers to be especially aware of the spirit of the person being served. The caregiver will learn to recognize spiritual needs, issues and concerns to empower the resident and families to find meaning, purpose and value to their life.
A Spirituality of Hospitality in the manner of St. John of God In the setting of caregivers it will develop an on-going process that identifies and addresses the specific health care needs of the residents and caregivers.
A Spirituality of Hospitality in the manner of St. John of God will assist the ministry in giving a tangible expression of its mission and values, bringing together our gifts for a more integrated service to our residents and their families.
WHAT IS MEANT BY SPIRITUALITY?

WHAT IS THE RELATIONSHIP THAT EXISTS BETWEEN ST. JOHN OF GOD’S SPIRITUALITY AND SPIRIT CARE IN THE ST. JOHN OF GOD MINISTRY?
St. John of God’s hospitality grew out of his personal experience of meeting the needs of those who suffered, with care and compassion, offering them respect and dignity in a manner that was restorative and healing.
St. John of God’s healing mission seeks to restore people to the full potential of love.
St. John of God’s healing touch is grounded in his capacity to detect patterns and opportunities, transforming them into meaningful points from which to begin to unravel and utilize the potential for meaningful interpretation of their life struggle.
St. John of God’s healing ministry seeks to put people in touch with their humanity by:
Welcoming, accepting, understanding, and paying attention to the needs of the residents, family members, and co-workers.
St. John of God spirit care is about putting people in touch with the redeeming value of vulnerability and getting in touch with the human as redeemed.
St. John of God spirituality is the application of the healing mission of Christ. Creating a culture of healing that expands the Catholic traditions of healing, social justice, and human development.
Hospitality as a spirituality is about meeting God in the people, events situation of illness and aging. It is a way of restoring hope.
SPIRIT CARE IN THE ST. JOHN OF GOD MINISTRY IMPLEMENTS A SYSTEMATIC APPROACH TO HOLISTIC WELLNESS.
It defines the state of spiritual unbalance as "a condition . . . that impairs hope, purpose, and meaning and a sense of lost connections to family and community.
Threatened or distressed spiritual health is evidenced by lack of identifiable hope, debilitating cynicism, isolation, and suffering, which can erode a patient's spiritual well-being.
Spiritual Integration of the Body- Mind Spirit requires:
Respecting people as they are in the context of their day-to-day lives.
Encourages caregivers to develop their own personal compassionate behaviors.
