On June 18th, the Helper’s Club of St. John of God hosted the 29th Annual Charity Golf Classic at the beautiful Angeles National Golf Course in Sunland, CA.108 golfers played this year for a great cause in helping the Brothers, Coworkers, and Residents of St. John of God Retirement & Care Center. This year’s event was one of the larger turnouts we had in some years.
The Golf Committee chaired by Will Smith made the Hole-In-One competition more exciting this year by offering the chance on four different holes this time. Although we didn’t have any lucky winners this year, the players welcomed the additional chances at winning. Thank you to Citizens Business Bank for being the Hole-In-One sponsor this year!
The awards’ banquet is always the highlight of the tournament as we enjoyed some good Mexican food and wine. Lewis & Associates Insurance Brokers have been big supporters of all the fundraising endeavors of the Brothers and were this year’s dinner sponsor. Many thanks goes to Mr. Jim Smallwood and his company for their continued support of this golf tournament.
At the banquet, we present the Art DiSpirito Award to a golfer who shares the sportsmanship, generosity, and just being a good person that Mr. DiSpirito embodied and this year’s recipient was Joseph Foster. He says that he owes his current success to his great uncle, Brother Patrick Corr, O.H. for talking him into leaving Ireland for sunny California. As he looked into the crowded banquet room, he also mentioned that he sees young Corrs who are now making their way here in California and will hopefully continue on in helping the organization and the Brothers.
There were 2 new foursomes this year we wish to welcome to the St. John of God Family, the Knights of Columbus from Apple Valley whose chapter is named after a Brother of St. John of God, Brother Oliver McGivern, O.H. The second newcomers are the team from Thomas Aquinas College in Santa Paula, CA.
The Hawaii Trip Raffle was also drawn that night and we continue to offer this great prize because of the William Hannon Foundation. We can’t
thank them enough for their longtime partnership in this event. The winners of the prizes were: Dorothy (Dickie) Olsen 3rd Prize Lottery Tickets, Christine Foster 2nd Prize Flat Screen Television and going to Hawaii is longtime friend of Brother Patrick, Mr. Richard Cunningham.
The Helper’s Club of St. John of God would like to thank all the benefactors for supporting this year’s tournament. They would especially like to give thanks to the Title Sponsor of the Tournament, Bob Smith Toyota. They had 3 foursomes present at the tournament and raised additional $1,500.00 at the awards’ banquet by auctioning some surprise baseball memorabilia. Next year, is the 30th edition of this Golf Tournament so all of us have to commit to make it a big celebration. Thank you again for all the volunteers, supporters and benefactors who helped make this event a great success!
